1. Project Overview

  1.1 Overview

Life Signal is a 2D pixel game that combines action and puzzle elements with a top view angle.

Players need to control the protagonist to avoid fierce extraterrestrial creatures while ensuring sufficient oxygen, use flying insects and mechanisms to solve puzzles, and ultimately send distress signals to his hometown.

Exploring and surviving on a planet filled with unknown and danger alone, the protagonist not only needs a strong physique and intelligence, but also a strong belief in facing all of this.

Every automatic save during the game is a moment when the protagonist firmly believes in themselves.

  1.2 Gameplay

The core gameplay of the game is adventure puzzle solving and level crossing in a 2D overhead view.

Players need to control an interstellar traveler with decreasing oxygen, summarize the patterns of biological activity within a limited time, and make reasonable use of the creatures in the levels and the characters' own abilities to pass through each level.

Players can convert and dispel enemy unit attacks by repelling and defending, but they cannot deal damage to any unit.

        In a level, players need to utilize enemy attacks and solve puzzles through the above behaviors to reach the next level;

At the same time, players' actions are also constrained by oxygen, and they need to constantly pay attention to their own oxygen inventory and make choices cautiously and quickly.

  1.3 Background story

The spaceship piloted by the protagonist failed in an unknown galaxy, and he had to land on a primitive planet full of dangerous creatures, separated from the human world he knew well.

In order to contact the rescue team at home, the protagonist must go to search for the signal transmitter that fell during the forced landing and light up his "Life Signal" for help.

This planet not only has highly aggressive beasts, but also traps left by lost civilizations. On the journey of adventure, the protagonist will constantly encounter various dangers and need to constantly pay attention to their oxygen levels.

  1.4 Art style

The game generally adopts pixel art. Unlike the conventional method of using tile maps for scene drawing, we adopt the form of overall hand drawn levels, making the level scene more unique and harmonious.

We did not use frame by frame animation in areas such as water surfaces that require simulation animation, but instead used shaders to achieve it, saving time and creating satisfactory effects.

  1.5 Process Introduction

The general process of the game is as follows: players control the protagonist to adventure and pass levels.

After completing a certain amount of teaching levels, the protagonist will encounter several tightly closed doors before the finish line.

Players can obtain the required keys in any order, and finally open all the doors to reach the finish line, ending the game.

3. Existing problems

  1. Enemy AI is not smart enough to have basic pathfinding and obstacle avoidance functions.

  2. Some art resources need to be optimized, such as the reflection of moving objects on the water surface, which has not yet been well integrated with the water surface.

  3. Some animation resources are missing, some animations have only made keyframes due to production cycle limitations, and some animations have not yet drawn keyframes.
